Four Years After the Riots

An insight into the 2011 riots. Politicians and the media were quick to label the actions of those who took part as ‘criminality, pure and simple’. While many of the rioters were acting with complete disregard for the law, little was said about the underlying causes of the worst civil unrest in a generation. This led to significant gaps in the public’s understanding of the riots. My research project raises questions regarding the immediate response to the event and more importantly what has been done by the state to understand and deal with the underlying social issues which caused the unrest.
